Relocating to or moving within the city limits of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex is going to mean establishing utility services, so you need to be prepared with the right information before making any calls or inputting information online to initiate an account. Dallas and surrounding areas in the Metroplex have different utility companies for various services, so be sure to shop around for the best rates.

Dallas Electricity Services

Residents of Dallas have choices when it comes to electricity, as this utility was deregulated by the city in 2002. Now residents can choose their provider through the Public Utility Commission’s website (PUC),

To select a service provider, just enter your destination zip code in the “enter your zip code” and the database will return a list of providers and plans for the area. CoServ Electric

While much of the Dallas Ft. Worth Metroplex is deregulated, other parts are not yet open to competition. For example, the company CoServ is the exclusive electricity provider to parts of Tarrant, Denton, Cooke, Grayson, Wise, and Collin counties. This utility also offers gas service in these areas.

Whether your area is served by CoServ or another electric utility provider, be sure to contact the provider at least 2-3 days before any move-in date for services to be initiated on time. Most providers require the following information to set-up an account:

  • New residency address
  • Phone number
  • Former address and electric provider
  • Driver’s license number
  • Social Security number
  • Current Employment
  • Possible letter of credit from former electric company
  • Set up fee that is not refundable
  • Deposit that is refundable

Water Services

Within Dallas, water, sewage and garbage collection are part of city services. To initiate services, contact the city’s Customer Service Number at (214) 651-1441. Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Alternatively, you may request to open your account online through All billing for water, sewage, garbage and recycling occurs in a monthly billing statement. Dallas requires the following to start services:

  • Fifty ($50) deposit to begin service
  • Current or new address
  • Phone number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Social Security number

Gas Services

For home, condo or apartment gas usage in the Dallas area, the local provider is Atmos Energy. They can be contacted through 888-286-6700 or through their online Start Service form. Also, it is essential to call the gas company before a move-in date, so a technician can inspect gas lines and turn on pilot lights.

To start service, you must provide the following:

  • New residence (address) and phone number
  • Former gas company
  • Current employment
  • Driver’s license number
  • Social Security number
  • Possible letter of credit from former gas company
  • Possible questions about any major appliances within the home

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to have services set-up and running prior to move-in day. The last thing you want is to move into a place in the dark. Also, make sure to schedule turn-off of your old services after the move is complete.
